Trash -or- Treasure

We live in a itsy bitsy town-1800ish people on a good day. Once or twice a year there is a “city-wide” clean up which I think is pretty standard for most communities. The ol’ everyone get into the spirit to make our community more beautiful, clean, etc… This year there is something new, though.

For the past several days people have been encouraged to put their trash/junk/what have you items out on their curb for anyone to take.

Basically, it is a free-for-all. People are driving around taking lawn mowers, computer monitors, used mattresses (yuck-makes me itch just thinking about it!), bicycles, you name it. And then whatever hasn’t been claimed by Monday the city will pick up and dispose of it.

I don’t know why I find this whole thing fascinating-I just do. The problem, however is that the homes that really do have stuff that need to be carried to the curb aren’t the ones that are doing so…therefore, the trash still continues. For example, any number of you that live around here are aware of our “new” neighbors across the street that have decided to park a horse trailer in the middle of their front yard~it sure would be nice if someone would back up to that and hook on and pull it off….surely it is included in this whole deal doesn’t it?! We won’t tell if you don’t.
