Carter’s lumber
Today was B E A Utiful. A balmy 70 degrees….an Indian Summer we are in I tell ya! We took advantage of the weather to get a TON of wood taken care of. Remember all of that wood that I mentioned someone had been painting over and over again for the past 100 years…literally? Well, yeah…that is what needed a’ workin’ on.
Hundreds of feet of antique trim and door toppers needed to be stripped which in itself is a mess. We did hire out quite a bit to be stripped last winter and are just now getting to stain it. But. Adam had to strip quite a bit more today using a stripper (not the kind that came to your mind) and a power washer.
We then stained all of the upstairs wood a yellow pine to match those floors. There is one bedroom upstairs that I chose to leave the trim/door headers painted. The guest room is painted in a really neat mossy-type green and I painted all of the woodwork in there white.
Downstairs, thank God, no one ever painted any of the woodwork, except for the bath and the kitchen, both of which I am keeping in white for now anyway. We are truly thankful that all of this wood is intact because it is oak and much much more pricey. As it is I spent an entire Saturday a few weeks back at an antique salvage place in Lincoln picking out antique trim and door headers that we are short on since we’ve added walls, doors, torn down walls, etc…Most of what I bought that day was pine, some oak, but mostly pine and I about fainted at the cost of it!
But this put soooo much into perspective for me as far as our home owners insurance. Side tangent, I know but bear with me a moment: We’ve struggled with our insurance company for the past two years. Our insurance for this home is outrageous! They will not let us insure it for any less than replacement cost which, of course, is what we want but to them “replacement cost” includes replacing all of the wood work in the entire home which is no longer made. So….they have an extra $125,000 tacked on for “costs” that they say it would take to replace all of this darn wood. We keep telling them, “people…if this house burns down we ARE NOT DOING THIS AGAIN!!!! We will build a nice new home with normal wood, trim, doors, windows, floors, stairs, etc”. They don’t care. We thought it was just our insurance company but supposedly not as we have gotten quotes from many now and everyone says the same thing. Due to the age of the home there are certain things that must be insured as an antique. Ok, end of side tangent.
Here is just a few pieces of the trim for the upstairs…
And the trim and door toppers for the main floor bath.
I’m not sure who this lady is but she offerred up free labor so we took it!

Thanks, Mom.

Since everyone else had their pictures taken I promised I would too…extreme close-up:

I got a boobie from the mailman!
Not only do I love babies but I am passionate about the entire childbirth process. About making it the mother and her support person’s experience. It is all about them. I love to teach women about ways to make their vaginal birth a success and make it theirs. This if why my partner and developed Births R Us. We became certified through Lamaze International which was a WAY bigger deal and process than we imagined but in the end I know it was worth it. In fact, since the beginning of our program almost two years ago EVERY woman that has attended has had a vaginal delivery (not bad if I say so myself considering the csection average nationally is 32%!).
In the last class we teach about breastfeeding and for the past two years I have, hmmm, how should I put this…to some extent used my own breast for the teaching (keeping it clothed of course!). I asked my wonderful mom-in-law if she could make me a breast and she came through for me as usual! It came yesterday JUST in time for class last night and I. LOVE. IT!

It goes great with the uterus that one of my nurses knitted for us! Anyway, mom-in-law…feel free to send another or two (hint hint)…the class loved it! Adam commented on how it seemed kind of “lumpy” and my response was, what boob isn’t?!
Parting thou hair
I clearly remember the day I discovered my first gray hair. It was five years ago and I was here at the clinic, a mere 28 year old child I was. I found it and proceeded to stomp to Doc’s office and showed him and told him it was because of him that it appeared. His response was classic…”yeah, it probably is”. For those of you that know Doc you probably agree, too, that he had a role in the development of it!
Fast forward five years…I can’t blame him anymore. I guess I can blame my father, at least that is where I am told those genes come from. BUT. Adam noticed the other evening that only one side of my head has gray hair~the side where I part it everyday and therefore the scraggly little white hairs stick up and out and all over. He tells me, “you need to part your hair on the other side”. Thanks, babe for the advice.
It is true, though…I did a trial run today and no gray hairs on this side. Hmmmmm, I wonder if it is the exposure to the elements that caused the left side of my head to become more gray? It’s like I’m 27 again, just by parting my hair on the other side! Not really, darnit.
She’s soooo right
Under one of my recent posts a friend commented on how a house-remodel is one of the truest tests of a marriage and I just need to say she is right on. In the know. Correcto. Hit it on the head. That’s all I have to say about that.
We have a friend that recently got married and he is apparently going to do a house remodel and all I wanted to write in the card we gave them was: quick, run for the hills! Don’t do it! Buy a house! Adam didn’t think it would be appropriate for me to write that so I didn’t…yet another marriage will be going through the whole “re-model nightmare”.
I love it, though how Adam says…no, no, no…I think it has just made us stronger. I respond by saying, real nice, dear, real nice…you just keep telling yourself that! Whatever floats his boat!
