Haiti: Close in our hearts & prayers

Okay, so our little “earthquake” as it was didn’t count. Haiti’s did. In an already extremely volatile and fragile country this major catastrophe has undoubtedly caused the loss of lives that we cannot even begin to imagine. The chaos has got to be beyond belief.

A photo Adam's Dad took

A country that has been unstable for as long as I have heard of it is even more so now. And, I mean unstable in many ways, of course. For example, I just read that it’s main jail in Port-au-Prince collapsed this morning and all of the inmates are now running free. Haiti has long been known for it’s voodoosim, creating frightening and dangerous rituals. These dangers were real before yesterday’s catastrophe and now today an entire new set of dangers are present.

Many do not know but Haiti holds a very special place in our heart because it is very special to Adam’s parents. They started doing missionary work in Haiti when Adam was merely a small child. His father continues to go to this day. Adam’s Dad goes down to Haiti for a week at a time quite often and preaches. It is dangerous. It frightens Adam’s Mom but it is his calling and we all know it. I won’t share the story where his Father once got his days mixed up and therefore didn’t get on his flight and his mother went to the airport and he didn’t get off of the plane. I hope you never experience what she and our family went through the next three hours thinking we had lost him (boy, was he in trouble!!!).

He has five churches and one orphanage there. One church is in Carrefour which is basically where the epicenter was. This is also where the orphanage is. Two churches are in Croix-des-Bouquets which unfortunately is also very close to Port-au-Prince and the final two churches are in the mountains.

This is one of the churches. It was a voodoo church that Adam's Dad bought.

So, a few things…the three churches and orphanage in Carrefour and Croix-des-Bouquets are all cement structure type buildings which is not good. This is more dangerous and the risk for loss of life increases of course because of this. The people living in these communities also live in cement structures…ditto for the same concern. The two churches and residents in the mountains undoubtedly were affected but hopefully not as bad as they live in more of hut-like structures that would not be as deadly.

A very big concern as of present is that one of the pastor’s house was on a hillside and all we are hearing about is how houses have just “fallen” down the hills. I ask of you two things. First, please say a prayer for the people of Haiti. He has been trying but Adam’s Dad cannot get through to any of his people (he has 7 pastors that he works with for his churches). This is not completely surprising as their phone lines are sketchy to say the least and are even worse now.

Here they were praying for Adam's Dad...we need to pray for them now more than ever

Second, take a moment and go to our parents’ website. Click on photos and then Haiti. We haven’t gotten anything new uploaded in awhile but still, take a peak into their lives. Take a peak into Dad’s Haitian family.

Isn’t she gorgeous?

Okay, he isn’t too bad either I guess. Awhile back I put a couple of engagement photos of my baby brother Jesse and his bride-to-be Linden but we got the real deal for Christmas! Yay! And, here they are scanned in. The last one isn’t the clearest but it is really cool as they chose what they call a “metallic” type finish to it so it is kind of shiny and glows almost. Hard to describe but real nice, Clark. It was taken in the dark. All of them were taken in Glacier National Park.

Let the photos speak for them self

I begged them to stop...I didn't want to look like a clown! For $50 I should look more like a lion, not a clown!!!

I did ask for the boots, though

Please just stop...stop staring at my roll

Let's just tell the people that you are taking my photo for my gorgeous looks, not to compare my size to the 21" monitor behind me

Hey~those rolls around my elbows serve as great cushions!

They’re baaack….

My mom’s cats have been staying with us again. Remember Philly? And his weight problem? I just thought I’d give you an updated picture of sweet Philly. Sadly he has fallen off of the horse as far as his diet goes and no, I did not weigh him~I’ve decided to let the guy keep his pride. Poor thing. We are, however concerned about his bum area (he still can’t reach there very well…and we are NOT…I REPEAT N-O-T GOING THERE AGAIN) so he has a hair appointment this next week to get it all buzzed off! I must say one last thing…this cat is the most lover of a cat ever:

The bestest vacation and 2010

Adam and I have both had this entire past week off and it has been awesome. Beyond great, I tell ya! My vacation was by choice, his was mandatory unfortunately. His company is struggling and one of their moves to regain financial stability was to close-up shop per se for this week without pay. So, I took the week off too and it has been glorious. We have done nothing but spend time together and work on the house finishing all sorts of little projects (fun stuff, no more big overwhelming junk!!).

I am hopeful for 2010. We spent New Year’s Eve with some great friends. Good food, great conversation, a strange game of Battle of the Sexes (it’s a board game for those of you who haven’t heard of it) and a brutal game of Pictionary where the guys actually won (yeah, I know…what’s up with that?) brought in the new year peacefully. We also played a little Wii, of which neither of us have EVER played. While I had many near death experiences while driving Mario Kart our friends small child said…. “I can’t believe you are a doctor”, still not sure how to interpret that????

Last night we also learned there was a casualty in the “pets” of the family (hee hee). “That” snake that has been giving me the willies in previous blogs. Read here and here if you need to catch up on the story. At any rate, Slyther very sadly choked on his supper of a mouse and died, literally. I was told they tried compressions~not sure if they were telling the truth. I did ask if he turned blue but they said he just stayed white. While I was excited for a brief moment at the news, we got a text message that they got another albino corn snake to replace Slyther already. Apparently he was under warranty or something.

Finally, I am hopefully that 2010 will be a year that surrounds me and my friends and loved ones with less death. This time already last year our phone rang and Adam’s Mawmaw had somewhat unexpectedly died. Our poor small community lost so many people this last year~both young and old. My Nana is gone. I hope that maybe my faith will strengthen again…I have somewhat lost it these past nine months…I think that death will do that to a person.
