Double date, Sandy & repercussions of rapid descent

We had an awesome time last night, a “blast” as Adam puts it. We spent the afternoon and evening with good friends going to Omaha for a movie and good food. Surprisingly, they invited us even after we took care of their children and allowed them to “run-off” their energy on our treadmill. You may remember…We went to the wrong theater at first, a gorgeous ginormous theater. My eyes dilated as we pulled up at the site of the thing…we don’t get out much to the movies. In fact, I can honestly say that the last movie we went to was two years ago and in Lincoln at a smaller theater…this one was HUGE! Alas, it was the wrong one.

So we headed to the correct one and were saddened to see that it was, of course, much much much smaller…..and dated. People, the tickets cost $2.00 per person. It was a “family value theater”. As the husbands said, they didn’t remember EVER taking us out to a movie that cheap…even when were young and dating!!! When inside there were mirrors all around with weird old lights, reminded me of a county fair that if you looked  at the lights just right you might have a seizure right then and there. There was a little old lady sitting right smack in the middle of things checking her blood sugar…strange (maybe she had too many milk duds). The snacks were the average price of other theaters and the seats and theater itself was A-okay I am happy to report, since we were there to see Sandy in the Blind Side. Adam loves her. Really loves her. He didn’t care for her as a blonde. But man, wasn’t that movie the best?!!! If only I can touch one person’s life like that in my lifetime I will be thrilled!

So, all in all the movie was not for lost. Sandy was great, the popcorn wasn’t burnt and there were no police guards in the lobby. Oh, yeah I forgot to mention that the last “small” theater Adam and I went to in Omaha there were police in the lobby and at the doors….I’m thinking we were in a bad neighborhood and we didn’t know it. Oh….and no seizures!

Next, we headed to awesome chow at Charleston’s. Never been but would recommend now to anyone!!! Great food and service. And, then we talked and talked and talked all the way home. It, was as this post started out saying…a great night.

I haven’t typed about it but this week has been a little tough going with the whole rapid fall down the stairs last Saturday. Surprisingly my fracture didn’t really bother me much the first few days. I think that is because every other muscle, tendon and ligament in my upper body did. I thought I was going to die, people. Seriously. Sunday morning I awoke and stared at the ceiling and thought….this is it…it hurt to breathe, you name it, all from the waist up. I must have stretched EVERYthing when I fell. Every little rib space, the breast bone and my pelvis hurt beyond belief. Monday and Tuesday sucked to say the least, Wednesday got a little better and I’ve been better since. Once my body started feeling better the arm started rearing it’s ugly head. I think I just hurt everywhere else so much that I didn’t notice it as much. But, seriously…if you decide you ever want to break a bone this is the way to do it. I pretty much have full function of my arm which is great. I put in an IUD this week, put on a cast, did some biopsies…basically functioned like normal. Sure, it pains a little but the main time it hurts is if my elbow is bumped and towards the end of the day and at night. Then it aches and stings and burns. Ice is my friend. I’ll take this over a cast any day. We re-xray’d it on Thursday and drats, it was still broken!

I have some pictures of #2 to post from her state bball last week maybe later today that we finally got done going through (I think there is some of #3-#6 also).

what we learned from the little people

If you didn’t read the earlier post about the little people’s visit, do so now…

So, here is what we learned from their all too brief stay.

  • In first and third grade you can’t do homework in pen. Adam tried and got the kids in trouble…notes were sent home on day two about using pencils!!!
  •  Giving a child free reign in the library to pick any book he would like us to read him to bed probably isn’t the best idea. Two minutes later he comes carrying out a children’s encyclopedia, 300 pages long and of course Adam cannot say no (note to self: set a limit on the size of the book I guess). She comes carrying out three scrapbooks telling our life story.
  • Getting “ready for bed” might just end up taking an hour and a half
  • Next time I need to be better prepared to have my hair styled. I didn’t have near enough product for her to use on my hair for the styles she was wanting to try. As Adam said the night they were gone (to soothe me in case I was feeling withdrawals)….honey, do you want me to french braid your hair?
  • When they say they want the salad bar at Pizza Hut they really just want a teaspoon of chocolate pudding
  • Sometimes it is easier to just give in
  • And, last but definitely not least because this is the BEST lesson learned. Apparently, this isn’t the best way to wear them out. To run them down and tire them out for bed after they’ve had ice cream after school, soda and hot chocolate at supper and cookies for dessert. Because they were still up and going at 11pm!

the little people are coming

are coming to stay, that is. We have some friends that had to be out of town somewhat unexpectedly this weekend and their two older kids are staying with us tomorrow and Tuesday (1st grade and 4th I believe). Sadly, this is the first time we’ve had company since we’ve bought this house, other than those that have come to stay to work on the house that is. I write sadly because the house is just now safe really for kids to be around as far as wires not hanging around and holes not being around for kids to fall in, etc. There are toilets that work, showers that work~ya know the basic things in life.

We aren’t accustomed to little people. We are used to animals. The type that when we get tired of them we can lock them in the back yard. The type we only have to feed twice per day and even then it is the same thing every time. My sister already asked, “what’re you going to feed them..they need to eat, you know”. We may not have had little people over for several years but let me tell you what, we aren’t that rusty.

It will be 36 hours of sugar, pizza, video games, nail-painting and playing, I tell ya. Adam is taking off early to pick them up from school both days and screw figuring out what to feed them ’cause we’re going out! All kids like pizza we figure…burgers too for night two. We have a new soda fountain in town that Adam happens to love. Lucky for him he’ll have little people to accompany him for an after school snack.

So, as we’re cleaning last night…cleaning places we haven’t cleaned yet in preparation for the little people I told Adam, “phew, I’m glad I got all that dog fur up, now I won’t worry about their poor little lungs”. Adam said, “that’s why we’re cleaning? I thought we’re cleaning so they wouldn’t tell their parents how messy we live.”. Silly, Adam.

The bestest vacation and 2010

Adam and I have both had this entire past week off and it has been awesome. Beyond great, I tell ya! My vacation was by choice, his was mandatory unfortunately. His company is struggling and one of their moves to regain financial stability was to close-up shop per se for this week without pay. So, I took the week off too and it has been glorious. We have done nothing but spend time together and work on the house finishing all sorts of little projects (fun stuff, no more big overwhelming junk!!).

I am hopeful for 2010. We spent New Year’s Eve with some great friends. Good food, great conversation, a strange game of Battle of the Sexes (it’s a board game for those of you who haven’t heard of it) and a brutal game of Pictionary where the guys actually won (yeah, I know…what’s up with that?) brought in the new year peacefully. We also played a little Wii, of which neither of us have EVER played. While I had many near death experiences while driving Mario Kart our friends small child said…. “I can’t believe you are a doctor”, still not sure how to interpret that????

Last night we also learned there was a casualty in the “pets” of the family (hee hee). “That” snake that has been giving me the willies in previous blogs. Read here and here if you need to catch up on the story. At any rate, Slyther very sadly choked on his supper of a mouse and died, literally. I was told they tried compressions~not sure if they were telling the truth. I did ask if he turned blue but they said he just stayed white. While I was excited for a brief moment at the news, we got a text message that they got another albino corn snake to replace Slyther already. Apparently he was under warranty or something.

Finally, I am hopefully that 2010 will be a year that surrounds me and my friends and loved ones with less death. This time already last year our phone rang and Adam’s Mawmaw had somewhat unexpectedly died. Our poor small community lost so many people this last year~both young and old. My Nana is gone. I hope that maybe my faith will strengthen again…I have somewhat lost it these past nine months…I think that death will do that to a person.

She’s got my back

My partner that is. Fellow Family Nurse Practitioner Mary Jane is watching out for my best interests. I walk into her office today and she says, “hey, did you see this?” and she’s all excited! It’s a research study from Yale. She gives it to me. It’s titled “Preserving Fertility for Women”.

Yale is actually removing women’s ovaries and freezing them and replacing them later on in a woman’s life for her to try to have a child then.

Hmmm…thanks for looking out for my oocytes, MJ~you’re the best!
