celebrating the lost babies

First….a 42 second video for you to watch. Sorry that I couldn’t figure out how to embed it into this post-you’ll have to click on the link to watch it.

She asked us if we wanted to be invited to the memorial celebrating all of the babies lost that year. She was a member of the pastoral staff that came to pray with us before surgery after we lost our fourth baby, Lainey Lynne’. My first response was “well, what about last year? What about Noelle?”. Our baby’s were sent to the University of Nebraska Medical Center for testing but were brought back and buried with all of the other babies lost at this hospital. The hospital does this annually and celebrates the hope of life that once was by having a memorial service at the grave site. Somehow, we didn’t receive our invitation in 2014. But, we did several weeks ago for this year’s memorial.

We had the perfect dress for Lainey to wear to celebrate her sisters and brought two gerber daisies, my Nana’s favorite flower. The memorial was right at the edge of what they call “baby land” in the cemetery. There were wind chimes hanging from shepherds hooks at so many of the baby headstones and it was breezy-you can hear it in the video….a delicate lullaby that plays 24 hours per day for all of the babies in baby-land. They sang a few songs and although done by a Catholic priest, the service was essentially nondenominational.

There was a somewhat nondescript headstone there that you can tell has been there for quite some time. Little toys, flowers and other what-nots have weathered the elements and lay at the base of it. This is where everyone was standing….After they sang, the priest asked everyone in attendance to come forward towards the burial site. I can honestly say that prior to him saying this we didn’t even see it. It was covered with sod. The place where all of our babies rest was barely visible. I don’t know what I expected but seeing that patch of earth that I knew was disrupted (for at least Lainey Lynne’) was upsetting. Noelle had to have been nearby as this whole plot is where they bury these babies every year. For the first time in months, tears ran down my face for a different reason than happiness. It was like all of that grief we went through just flooded back into me full-force. Adam was holding Lainey and she began to fuss every so slightly so he left my side to walk with her. We had decided before we came that we definitely wanted to go to this as a family but if she cried he would go to the car with her as undoubtedly there would be other parents there that are not as blessed as we are. Hearing a child cry is such a beautiful sound when you never got the chance to hear it.

The priest asked the parents that were there to acknowledge the lives lost by saying their baby’s names out loud. No one said anything. Adam nudged me. I said both girl’s names. Noelle-and-Lainey. Several parents were crying when they said their baby’s name aloud. Every name was beautiful. As they said during the service, each life that was lost took a little bit of hope with it. I know we had none. Hope, that is. So much was restored to us on January 22, 2015. Praise God for this!

They then invited all of the parents to take a pink rose and move it from the vase on the left to the vase on the right with the baby’s breath, which was to be left at the grave site after the service. Everyone was also given a rose when we left.

We are so thankful for this experience. It was just another step in the right direction of the grief process. Having a “place” to go, a “place” to perhaps bring a flower to our babys is priceless and just knowing where they lay means more than I can put into words.

Thank you, thank you to Good Samaritan Hospital for giving us this gift.

Four-month favorites

Lainey Noelle is growing so fast. We can now officially look away and then turn around and she is on the absolute other side of the room. At not quite 18 weeks, rolling is her jam and she loves it!

Here are a few other things we are loving:

You all undoubtedly have seen the milestone cards I use. I am very thankful for these as they force me to document certain things. I tend to be OCDlike and take photos of EVERY first that she does, but these cards make me stop and appreciate certain things more. For awhile we thought we were going to dress her up at each age milestone but she is so squirmy! The caterpillar has been our favorite!

I will likely blog again about our experience with Lainey’s reflux. While there have been days that we have considered just carrying a beach towel around with us, for the most part we are still in love with these and because of that they make the four month favorite list AGAIN! Because of the reflux, we have used them as bibs a few times also so the snaps are so nice to have.

After we lost our fourth baby I mentioned (once) somewhere that I would love to have giraffes in my baby’s (someday) nursery. You would not believe how people picked up on this little piece of information. I can’t even begin to list the giraffe paraphernalia we got as gifts! Total awesomesauce. Which is why, of course, I had to have a Sophie. It turns out Sophie is the bomb. Lainey loves Sophie. She specifically prefers her hooves. I am really glad places like Target are selling Sophie now as it used to be only boutiques that you could get her. I will say, though, that you can get her cheaper on Amazon, fyi.

As I have talked about in the distant past on the blog, we are probably the most unhealthy natural, organic want-a-be’s you’ll ever meet. We knew right away that somehow we wanted to use glass bottles. I know all bottles are BPA free but also believe there are other chemicals in plastic that the US has yet to ban. Luckily, one of the nurse’s from the hospital had three glass bottles she gifted to us the night we brought Lainey home to get us started and I ordered these for the rest. We’ve been very happy with them and have since ordered in the larger size. I don’t know if we’ll use them as sippy’s or not but they can be transitioned straight to sippy cups just by purchasing sippy lids when that time comes. Incidentally, Lainey’s most favoritest teether EVA’ happens to be from the very same company. We got ours at Whole Foods in Omaha and it comes in a set of two.

The only time little missy has had a diaper rash was during her first week when all of her new little newborn skin was all peely and such. Otherwise if she is a little redness, we put this on and she has done amazing. I will also say that she has worn every brand diaper possibly known to man-kind. Well, probably not every…but close.

Have you heard of The Manhattan Toy Company? We love all of their stuff-in fact the first thing we got from them was off of Zulily and called the winkel. We put it in Lainey’s Easter basket and she loves it. It is easy to hold, to chew on & really light-weight.

That’s it for four months!

May you have a blessed week! I hope we continue to have nice weather so we can keep going on our nightly walks-Lainey loves going on walks! We found out about an unexpected event this Sunday that will be very special to our little family. I will share about it soon!

Lastly, come on people….none of you have any guesses about this? None of you? For real? I’ll write a little more about what it is and why we have it soon also!

WHAT AM I?

So I miss writing. I really do. Right now I have a sticky note sitting next to me of things I want to share but I literally just looked over my shoulder and not only did Lainey roll from her back to her tummy but she also turned 180 degrees. How. Cool. Is. That! I don’t want to miss anything. All of these little things that this gal is doing freaking amaze me. Clearly I knew she would do all of these things. Educated as I am, I check for and ask parents about these things every day but watching her do these things blows my ever loving mind! I am so blessed to have the luxury of having her be at home with Adam. And, yes, it IS very much a luxury to have a spouse that can be a stay-at-home parent. I knew within minutes when she rolled from her back to her tummy the first time and had a video to watch within minutes after that!

I want so much for her and want to do so much for her. Adam says we can only spoil her if she doesn’t know that she is being spoiled. Oh man, we are so in trouble!

We started planting our garden last week…mostly all of the root veggies so far. Peas, parsnips, turnips, sweet potatoes, carrots and rutabagas (and no, Janna, rutabagas are not a type of purple car!). We plan on also doing egg plant, green beans, acorn and butternut squash and zucchini. Our goal is actually to try to do exclusive breast milk until about nine months and then introduce solids. Initially (like in last week!) we were thinking about pureeing the veggies from the garden and putting them up for the winter….but  now we are thinking more about going the baby-led weaning approach. The whole theory behind this simply makes sense to me. I’m just not real sure what to do with foods like rutabaga (ha!), the squashes, etc. I’d love to still be able to use our bounty from this summer for Lainey next winter but if we don’t puree them I am afraid that blanching and freezing them will make their consistency too gooey? Hmmmm, not sure. If anyone has any ideas or other baby-led experiences you’d like to share, let me know, emmkay?!

In other news, we now know with 100% certainty that a blow-out is not a true blow-out unless it:

  1. includes all four of the child’s extremities
  2. requires the disposal of the outfit the child was in
  3. requires the use of every wipe you have left in your possession
  4. involves the child’s neck
  5. gets under the parent’s fingernails

Adam has created a song list that he has playing during the day for Lainey titled “Lainey play time”. In it includes a lot of classic children’s christian songs but it also has many of the veggie tale songs. This one in particular has really taken our home by storm. I would like to say I am embarrassed that we both know pretty much all of the words to this song (but I’m not!). The thing is this…the song is hilarious.

p.s. Lainey is FOUR months old tomorrow!!!
