My freshly employed husband

I always say that my husband is the hardest worker that I know that makes no money. Literally. He is the most generous man I know. The past five years have been a time in our lives where he has tried many different jobs. He wanted to be his own boss. Own his own business. He has his degree in electronic engineering but has been dabbling in other things. We owned the furniture store of course for over two years which he (we really) actually loved but then the economy started to turn and we sold it “just in time”.

He went from that to owning Four Seasons~a lawn and snow business. Meanwhile we opened Heartland Gifts and Decor which we recently closed because of reasons mentioned here. The lawn business actually didn’t do too bad. But we aren’t in the mountains and the snowfall is unpredictable. He only had to push snow three times last winter. Therefore, no financial security whatsoever. And, we have been talking more and more about children and about being more financially secure. He just happened to get a call about a potential job from an old friend.

Back when I was in grad school ten years ago we lived in Grand Island, Nebraska and he was an engineer for EDS, a sign company. They made and repaired, etc the signs that you see at businesses such as gas stations (the electrical ones). Well, then we moved to Great Falls where I got my first position after school and that was that. EDS was recently bought out by a company called SignCo located in Lincoln. A much BIGGER company. They are the ones that installed DLP systems for Penn State University, Mississippi State University and Oregon State University as well as the Detroit Pistons for example. Well, they need another engineer and one of his old friends from the sign company in Grand Island recommended they track Adam down. He has worked just a few days this past month just getting his feet wet. Some of the electrical components are changed of course but all in all he remembers most of it. The first night he came home and told me how GREAT it felt to hold the soldering iron again and that he hoped I didn’t mind if he became a nerd again! WEIRD! So, they tell him Adam, here is your desk and he looks at it and behold: it is the SAME desk he had ten years ago in Grand Island. When they bought out the company everything was bought. He’s excited, I’m excited, I am sure our checking account is excited!

I will miss him being so flexible, though. And I will worry about him commuting. It is about 50 minutes one way. But, it is a necessary change…who knows what the future holds for me too. I just know that good things are for sure to come! We have to keep thinking that somehow~if only I remember this EVERY day.

Bathing update

Well, Adam and his Dad said we’d have a running shower of sorts by the end of this day. But you know how that goes. How ANY major project goes. It just so happens that the next morning I had a perinatology conference to go to in Omaha and had to leave at 5:45 am to get there in time….and I went with one of my partners so I HAD to bathe~small enclosed space in the car as it is.

I love my husband. He got up with me and filled one of our 5 gallon Culligan water bottles with hot water and helped me get ready. I wasn’t able to wash my hair until last night. I was starting to get worried…when do people start getting dreadlocks from not washing their hair?

Today Is A New Day! Tonite we have a shower and a choice of three different bathrooms to use. The shower and jacuzzi in the master bath are not yet ready but boy does it look close, especially considering the jacuzzi tub sat in the hallway for a year and in the bedroom for another year and now it is in it’s actual room where it belongs.

My Father-in-law had to go home today. We will miss him. He has helped us immensely this past month and I know although it was hard work my husband will cherish the memory of his time working side-by-side with his Pop. When he left he said he was glad to help us but that he’d NEVER work this hard for anyone else…only his son and daughter-in-law and other family if needed but otherwise NEVER. It was hard labor much of the time, ie: tearing out walls, etc.

We are both VERY tired. Adam, especially. He has been staying up sooo late every night working on things and getting up by 7am. I am tired and getting similar amounts of sleep but it is a different scenario. My brain is tired, I am not physically laboring like he is. Last night we had a darn appendicitis that I had to help do surgery on and didn’t get to bed until 3am and then saw patients this morning in the clinic. I was pleasantly surprised to come home to find my Mother here at the house this afternoon working along side my husband and his Dad. She, too is amazing and says she’ll be back for more tomorrow!

One thing we are looking forward to: our STAYCATION!!!!! On Monday there is a company out of Lincoln that we hired to come in and refinish all of the wood floors in this house. The house was all carpeted when we bought it and we ripped out carpet room by room to discover beautiful floors that just need some tlc. The problem is that you can’t open windows/doors and cannot walk on the floors for four days. We are planning on coming back to stay in the house Thursday night….they said we could as long as we wear socks on our feet only. So, yes we are having a staycation, kind of…I’ll be working everyday as usual and Adam starts his new engineering job in Lincoln on Monday so he’ll be working each day as well and we are just staying down the street at the local hotel. I’ll post pictures of our lovely accommodations later…can’t wait!

In case you were wondering…(just in case)

In reference to the below post some may wonder where the toilet is since it is not in the bathroom. Well, here it is of course….in the KITCHEN. Where else would it be?

I am assured, however by my wonderful hard-working husband and father-in-law that by tonite I will have my choice of restrooms and showers to use. ie: both the downstairs and the master bath will be done.

Difficult hygiene

So I am now paying the price for this early post. This is now our primary place to obtain hygiene in our home. Notice there is no shower curtain, no mirror, no anything really. Other than the really hot water that feels REALLY good according to my father-in-law who is here helping us with our house. We do have a working toilet upstairs and a sink there too. So you potty and brush your teeth up there and shower (as best as you can) on the main level.

After his shower my father-in-law asked for some tylenol and I said well, it is somewhere in there:

Progressive Dinner: WOWZA!

So Adam and I were invited to our first progressive dinner Friday night. The Doc I work with “won” it at a silent auction put on by a local church. The dinner was for six so the three of us providers and our spouses went.

I had never been to one before, in fact…none of us had but boy were we in for a treat! We started at one home where we had different wines and hors d’oeuvres to die for!

We then went to another home for the meal. The house was awesome because it is old like ours with a ton of charm. In other words, our house envies this house and wants to be like this house someday. The dining table was gorgeous. All done in black, gold and crystal. Gorgeous china and silver. It reminded me of that scene in the movie Pretty Woman where Julia Roberts was trying to learn which fork goes with what, etc…

Using a silver tong they handed us hot wet towels to “freshen” up with when we first sat down and then we were promptly served wine and our first course. Menus were waiting for us and the meal was considered international.

The first course included two foods: bruchetta from Italy and gazpacho from Spain. The gazpacho was amazzzzzzing. It was a tomato-like soup with lots of veggies in it….but it was cold. On purpose, of course. It weirded Adam out but it was soooo soooo good and how cool is that anyway: a cold soup during the summertime!

The second course was a spinach & feta sald from Corsica…also very yummy.

The third couse included souvlaki from Greece (very good: lamb and chicken), guacamole y camarones from Mexico and basmati rice curry from Thailand. All sooo good.

Have I mentioned how good this all was yet?!

To “cleanse our palate” we had lemon sorbet from France.

For dessert we had mousse au chocolat in a home-made crust from Belgium. To. Die. For! Followed by Irish coffee from Ireland.

They then brought out cognac in these little fancy crystal glasses that I guess are called cordial glasses. Supposedly you are supposed to “sip” this type of a drink. Adam and Steven drank theirs in one gulp. It wasn’t bad actually…very potent stuff though as I noticed an hour later I was still feeling a little hot!

Anyways, it was amazing and we thank Doc for winning the auction and inviting us along and the persons who did the cooking~wow! Father Dunavan, CJ Lamb and Steve & Kathy Mercure are AWESOME! I am happy to say, too, that although it was by far the fanciest dinner that any of us had probably every had I think we handled it pretty well. No one passed gas, we seemed to all use the correct silverware at the right time, there was no profanity said at the dinner table, we all had our napkins on our laps, etc…Overall, not a bad bunch I tell ya!

Hmmmmm, maybe Doc will win the dinner this year at the auction again….
